Where the Finds Come From

SOURCED WITH A GOOD EYE

Some of what we find is a hundred years old. Some of it was made last month by someone we follow on Instagram. Some of it is a smart piece from a store you know, with a good eye behind it. We hunt antique shops and fairs, talk to dealers and collectors, go to trade shows, and work with independent artists and makers. If it makes us ask “where did you find that?!”, it’s a candidate.

Are you a dealer, collector or maker? Say hello

FOUNDER

I’ve always been drawn to the unexpected: the color you wouldn’t think to use, the piece of art you can’t stop looking at, the object with a story behind it. Long before BAM Curators existed, I was constantly searching for those things.

That curiosity has followed me around the world. From the markets of Morocco and Peru to galleries and artisan workshops across Nepal, Japan, Cambodia, Botswana, India, Italy and beyond, some of my favorite travel memories have come from getting lost in local markets, meeting artists and makers, and discovering pieces I could never find anywhere else. I’ve always believed the things we surround ourselves with should feel personal, collected and a little unexpected.

Over the years, that instinct naturally found its way into interiors. I designed two of my own homes from the ground up and became the friend people called when they needed help finding the right piece, pulling a room together, or seeing a space differently. After years of hearing, “You should be doing this,” I finally decided to listen.

After leaving a career in corporate media and moving from New York City to Nashville to build a new home with my husband and our three boys, I knew I wanted my next chapter to be something creative, something rooted in what I genuinely love.

BAM Curators grew from that passion: a place to discover remarkable pieces, source the hard-to-find, and create spaces that feel elevated without feeling overly designed. I believe the best homes are layered over time, filled with things that spark joy, start conversations and tell a story about the people who live there.

BAM Curators is me finally putting a name to what I’ve been doing all along.
I’m so glad you’re here!

OUR SPECIALTY

One perfect piece can change a whole room. A few favorites we’ve tracked down for clients.

Curved green tweed barrel chair on a wood frame beside a carved black wood side table, under a framed leather riding vest OFFICE CHAIR

The Thinking Chair

Every office needs a spot to think that isn’t the desk chair. We sourced a sculptural barrel chair in a nubby green-and-cream tweed on a solid wood frame, then paired it with a carved black side table. Above it hangs the client’s father’s motorcycle vest, patches and all, which we had custom framed so a family heirloom could become the room’s art. Masculine, but still designed.

Mongolian sheepskin pillow against a hand-knotted wool rug and white gauze linen bedding BEDROOM DETAILS

Neutral, Never Flat

We can do neutrals, but we need texture! For this calm bedroom we layered white gauze linen bedding, a Mongolian sheepskin bench and a hand-knotted wool rug. Every surface asks to be touched, so the room feels soft and serene instead of plain.

Navy stair runner with a cream spotted pattern running up a white staircase STAIR RUNNER

The Spotted Stair Runner

At BAM, we consider spots a neutral. (We’re only half kidding.) This family needed a runner that could handle a dog who takes the stairs at full speed. A plush navy with cream spots hides paw prints and wear, and the navy echoes colors used all through the house.

St. Frank kilim-print lumbar pillow on a goldenrod peace-sign throw, layered over a plush cream checkered blanket BEDDING ACCENTS

The Guest Bedroom Layers

Sometimes the whole story of a room lives at the foot of the bed. A St. Frank lumbar pillow in a faded kilim weave, a goldenrod throw with a woven peace sign and the softest checkered blanket. Texture, function and storytelling, the kind guests steal for the couch.

Laundry room with black terrazzo backsplash, white quartz counter and black faucet TILE SOURCING

The Laundry Room

Laundry rooms deserve personality too. We sourced a bold black terrazzo with oversized marble chips and ran it as a full backsplash over a hand-picked quartz counter. The palette stays monochromatic, but the tile makes it anything but plain.

Mint Rainwashed cabinets with gold Michael Aram sun knobs MUDROOM & PANTRY

Here Comes the Sun

This mudroom and pantry just needed a little sunshine. We painted the cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s “Rainwashed,” a soft sea-glass green, and finished them with gold sun knobs from Michael Aram. A tan animal-stripe wallpaper wraps the walls, so the busiest drop zone in the house now feels like a happy little escape.

The Lounge — After Hours

An old dining room that never saw a dinner party became the place where the grown-ups finally get the house to themselves. This room is made for adult hangs: good music, a delicious candle and conversation that runs late.

House of Hackney wallpaper wraps the room in pattern, and organic-shaped custom rugs soften the floor under a pair of furry chairs. Real photography hangs in cool frames, and an off-center alabaster sconce glows against handmade zellige tile.

Every piece has a story. The gilded mirror was a lucky find in a Manhattan antique shop. The carved wooden lion is a family heirloom passed down from a grandparent. The shelves mix estate sale treasures with books curated to match the mood and tell the family’s story, and shapes and textures change at every turn, from shaggy sheepskin to glossy tile to carved wood.

Intimate, collected and a little bit moody, it’s the room everyone drifts to at the end of the night.

Cape Cod Cottage Kitchen

We didn’t want to erase this kitchen’s history. We wanted to bring it forward. The original honey-wood cabinets and green walls had real charm under the dated finishes, so we kept that palette and made it fresh.

Warm white oak Shaker cabinets replace the old slab doors. Hand-glazed mint and cream tile, laid in vertical stripes, carries the green onto the backsplash, and we moved the outlets under the cabinets for a cleaner look. KitchenAid appliances in their Juniper finish pick up the green, and a light terrazzo floor keeps the room bright and beachy while holding up to sandy feet.

The result is clean and bright but still feels cozy, like it’s always belonged on the Cape.

The Playroom

A space for little ones to thrive in the wild. A dramatic willow-tree mural wall sits against soft blue walls and forest trim, and a navy racetrack rug makes the floor part of the play.

Grown-up pieces like a burl cabinet and a chartreuse sculptural chair make it a room the whole family wants to be in.

Welcome to the Jungle — Jack & Jill Bath

We love bathrooms at BAM, and this one is our wildest yet! Two kids, one bathroom, and a whole lot of personality. We started with the wallpaper, Cole & Son’s “Savuti,” where monkeys snack, chameleons climb and hoopoes take flight across deep jungle green. Then we let the rest of the room swing from there.

Brushed-brass Kohler fixtures and a round brass mirror bring the glow, and white Visual Comfort sconces on black backplates keep it crisp. Down below, powder-blue vanities with marble-and-black pulls sit on navy hexagon tile. In the shower, a blue chevron mosaic niche gives the dinosaurs somewhere to live.

We designed it all the way down to the zebra towels and a banana bath mat, because in this jungle, every detail gets to have a little fun.

Five Minutes with a Maker

Meet
Amy Harms

She paints, cuts, and weaves music into memory.

A note from Judi

When we moved to Nashville, my husband and I knew we wanted one special piece for our home, something that could only be ours and that told our family’s story through music. Music is everything in our house, and Pink Floyd, my father-in-law’s favorite band, has been on constant play in his memory since we sadly lost him in 2018.

I was on the hunt for that piece when I found Amy on Instagram, and I stopped scrolling the moment I saw her profile. I knew right then I had to have one of her pieces. What I didn’t expect was that, on top of her incredible talent, Amy would turn out to be one of the kindest, coolest, and most genuine people I’ve ever met. Her love for music and for what she does is contagious, and I could spend days chatting with her in her studio.

Her piece is the first thing you see when you walk through our door, and everyone stops to look. The longer you stare, the more you find, and no two people see the same thing. It’s a story that never stops unfolding. We loved it so much that we commissioned a second one as a wedding gift for dear friends.

Amy, thank you so much for sharing your story with us. We’re so grateful!

Five minutes with Amy

How would you describe what you do in one sentence to someone who’s never seen your work?

I cut my paintings into hundreds of strips, then rearrange and weave them back together into musical memories—layered with texture, history, and meaningful moments from our lives.

How did you first get into paper weaving?

Even though my background is in music—I majored in music and taught piano for decades—I also spent about 15 years putting together large-scale commercial art projects in Chicago. I usually developed the concepts and then sourced artists to create them, which meant I was often alongside artists in their studios watching their processes unfold. While representing other artists, I was always experimenting with my own work: painting on canvas, drawing, taking classes at design school. I was especially drawn to artists who deconstructed their work in some way.

My paper weavings really came out of nowhere in 2020, when my piano studio shut down during COVID and suddenly I had all the time in the world to experiment. I had boxes of donated records and CDs, so I started shredding album covers and playing with them on a small scale. Eventually I wondered: What would happen if I painted something large, cut the entire painting apart, and rearranged it? The first time I began weaving rows of my painted strips together, I was hooked. I immediately felt like I’d found my artistic voice. There was something about the rhythm of weaving all those rows that connected directly to my musical background. Once I began embedding each piece with its own musical inspiration, I realized that was the story I wanted to tell visually. It was a true “aha” moment, and I haven’t wanted to do anything else since.

Where does music come into your process?

Music is the source of inspiration for all of my work. It’s there at the very first conceptual spark, it’s constantly playing in my studio while I paint, and I even cut and weave my paintings to its rhythms. Then I layer in pieces of the music’s story—bits of album covers, lyrics, memorabilia, or personal details that connect the work to the person I’m creating it for.

What’s playing in the studio right now?

Oh wow…where do I begin? I primarily listen to whatever music I’m currently working with, so this summer there was A LOT of New Wave and Synth Pop—New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cars, Simple Minds. I mean, I was actually singing karaoke to Mr. Mister all summer.

I’m still deep in that genre, but I always come back to my staples: Dolly Parton, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Chris Cornell, Heart. There’s usually some bluegrass mixed in there too. I’m also working on a broader exhibition project inspired by my collegiate experience performing with the symphony, so there is a pretty wild mix of sounds coming out of my studio right now.

What’s the most surprising song or story someone has asked you to weave?

One client was closing a business she had run with her husband for a decade and beginning a new venture. As a surprise anniversary gift, she asked me to create something that captured those ten years together with their venue. She gave me dozens of concert posters that had hung on the walls of their venue, Wine Down Nashville, and I incorporated pieces of all of them into one giant painting for their home. Watching her husband’s face as he saw it for the first time—and then watching him discover all those little fragments of performances and memories they’d shared over the years—was incredibly special. It became so much more than a painting. It was a decade of their life woven together.

What’s one thing people don’t realize about how your pieces are made?

That I paint everything first—and then I cut it apart. People are also usually surprised to learn that I primarily studied and taught music my whole life rather than fine art. But I think that’s actually given me a unique perspective. I approach art with musical instincts: rhythm, repetition, movement, tension, harmony. I never learned all the rules you’re supposedly meant to follow in art school, and I love it that way. I learn through experience in my own practice and prefer beating to my own drum, so to speak.

Painted strips laid in rows, ready to be wovenRearranged
Every piece starts as a painting and ends as hundreds of strips

What has been the most fun part of your job? Most rewarding?

Finding myself again creatively, but in a completely new realm. For most of my life, that creative voice came through studying and performing piano and choral music. Now I’ve found another voice through painting and weaving. The most rewarding part is the connection I feel with the people who commission me to tell their stories. When they see the finished work, I can feel their emotions and their immediate attachment to something I made. It makes me feel like a little piece of us will always be connected through the art. Every piece I work on becomes ingrained in me somehow and carries me into the next project. And I like to think my clients get to keep a little piece of my heart when they look at their piece, too.

Where can people find you, and how do they commission a piece?

I’ve participated in local art shows including the Harding Art Show and Artclectic Nashville, but I primarily represent myself and share my work through Instagram and my website. Locally, you can also find smaller works at Nashville International Airport through Nashville Jam Session, and larger commissioned pieces in hotels including Canopy by Hilton Nashville Downtown and Hutton Hotel in Nashville, as well as The Balladeer Hotel in North Carolina. For commissions, people can reach out directly through Instagram or my website. Most commissions begin very simply—with a conversation about the music and the story behind it.

Hardware Is the Jewelry of the Home

Assortment of cabinet knobs and pulls in brass, stone, wood and lacquer

There’s a reason designers call hardware the jewelry of a home. It’s the first thing you touch and the last thing you notice — until it’s perfect. Then it’s all you see.

Think about it like getting dressed. A simple black dress is lovely. Add the right earrings, and suddenly it’s an outfit. Cabinets work the same way: the boxes are the dress, and the hardware is what makes them yours.

The options are endless

For the neutral lovers

Hardware is the perfect little dare. It isn’t a paint color you’ll live with for ten years or a sofa you can’t return — it’s a small, low-risk way to step outside your comfort zone. Go subtle with warm brass on white cabinets, or make a statement with gold suns on sea-glass green, like our mudroom. Either way the whole room changes, and you can always swap them back.

“Match the mood, not the room. A quiet kitchen can handle one bold choice — and that’s often what makes it feel finished.”

Not sure where to start? We’ll pull a few options for your space.

JOURNAL · THE CHEAT SHEET

Hang It Right: The BAM Art Cheat Sheet

“How high should this go?” Hanging art is one of those things almost everyone second-guesses, and it can make or break a room. So here are the numbers we actually use, plus everything in our toolkit. Save it, print it, stick it on the fridge.

Illustrated cheat sheet: 6 to 8 inches above furniture, art spanning two thirds to three quarters of the piece below, 3 to 5 inches between a duo or trio of larger pieces, 2 to 3 inches between smaller frames in a gallery wall, 4 to 6 inches above wainscoting, 3 to 7 inches above a mantel, 6 to 8 inches above a toilet, and a picture light or sconces to highlight art

Start at eye level

Always hang art at eye level — about 57–60 inches from the floor to the center of the piece (or the center of a group). It’s the gallery standard, and it keeps art living in the room with you instead of floating up near the ceiling.

How high above…

How wide & how far apart

Light it up

A special piece (an original painting, a family portrait, the one you walk past every day and still love) deserves its own light. It’s the difference between art on a wall and art that glows at night.

Mirrors, too

The same rules apply to mirrors, with one bonus question: what will it reflect? Hang a mirror across from a window or a lamp to bounce light around, and make sure it reflects something you actually want to see twice (not the toilet!).

A few pro tips

Our toolkit

Protect what you love

If it’s fine art, or a piece that isn’t behind UV-protective glass, find a spot out of direct sunlight so it doesn’t fade.

“These are our general guidelines. If something feels perfect to you, do what makes you happy — always.”

Have a piece and no idea where it goes? That’s exactly what a consult is for.
